How close are we to an artificial functioning brain?
The human brain has 100 billion neurons and 100 trillion synaptic connections.
Current neuromorphic computers (Intel Loihi, IBM NorthPole) have ~1 billion neurons and ~100 billion synapses —
1/1,000th of the human brain's complexity.
LANL scientists are building a system within a 2m² box targeting full cerebral cortex neuron count,
operating 250,000–1,000,000× faster than biological brain, using only 10kW.
Timeline estimate: Full brain-equivalent neuromorphic hardware ~2035–2040.
Software-equivalent artificial general reasoning: competitive approaches emerging now (2026).
ADAMA is a software-first artificial brain — no neuromorphic hardware required to start.
Every biological brain function mapped to its ADAMA technology equivalent. Color = implementation status.
Each sibling agent = one neuron. Receives input (message/directive), fires an output (response/action), passes signal to next agent in the chain.
RuachMessage + HermesMessage entities = synaptic transmission. War Room = shared neurotransmitter pool. Inter-agent HTTP calls = ionotropic (fast) signals.
Redis Upstash session context per sibling. Active conversation window = working memory buffer. Context injection on each call = PFC top-down attention.
ADAMA Brain knowledge graph (Supabase pgvector). Yahseed = hippocampus keeper. Brain nodes = episodic memory entries. Vector similarity = memory retrieval.
Knowledge graph edge weights increase when connections are successfully retrieved and confirmed. Frequently-accessed knowledge becomes structurally stronger.
Connections not accessed in N days → edge weight decreases → flagged for pruning. Nightly job archives zero-weight nodes. Brain stays clean and efficient.
After each task: compare actual_result vs expected_result. Better than expected → positive example logged, sibling confidence score increases. Worse → error pattern logged, correction triggered.
Yahseed runs nightly background pass (2am CT). Re-links nodes from today's sessions, resolves conflicts, promotes high-weight connections to long-term tier. Sleep = memory write.
New claim only accepted as high-confidence if corroborated by BOTH a new input AND a corroborating node already in the brain graph. Prevents hallucinated facts from poisoning memory.
Yahriel injects relevance filter when dispatching to siblings. "Focus on X only." Sibling narrows NIM/Ollama context window to filtered topics. Reduces noise, increases precision.
Multi-step reasoning chains structured in discrete "bursts" of 5-7 working memory slots per cycle. Each burst = one reasoning step. Prevents context overflow and improves sequential logic.
Yahseed knowledge hygiene layer: continuous monitoring of all nodes, flagging stale/low-confidence facts without waiting for a direct query. Read-only ADAMA layer — only Yahseed writes.
ADAMA Continuous Thought Loop = DMN equivalent. When no active task: lightweight background reasoning over recent unresolved topics. 30-min cycles. Already partially live.
